Choosing The Right Sport For Your Child

We live in a country of amazing choices. Every time we want to buy or do something, we have limitless options and youth sports are no different. As parents, you are often inundated with flyers, emails, friends, etc. telling you to join this league or team and promised all kinds of things as well. On the other hand, it is also difficult not to live through our children as our glory days have long since slipped from our grasp.

As much as I said I was not going to be one of those parents, and I still have some time to follow through on that promise, I fell into that trap of living through my son just a little. My son is now a year and a half old, but when he was 9 months old, we took him to my nephew's soccer game. On the sideline, my son crawled over to a soccer ball and was obsessed with it. His eyes filled with wonder and amazement at this rolling object and at that point, I realized that not only was he old enough to start "training," but he did not have any balls of his own to play with. On our way home, I ordered a Fisher Price basketball hoop and ball to introduce him to the game that I love. While my son now begs me to be lifted up to dunk the ball and loves the positive reinforcement of "Good Pass!" every time the ball rolls out of his grasp, I have to remember that playing basketball is his choice and I can't care more than he does about it. I'm just their as a facilitator and a cheerleader.

With that being said, I came across this amazing infographic by Michelle Darling, a webmaster for Nimble Sports, a "Made in the USA" gymnastics equipment manufacturer. who has more than 15 years of experience in graphic and web design/development, advertising and marketing. This infographic lays out the the entire process of helping choose the correct sport for your child including their wants and desires, financial commitment, time commitment, and more.
